2020 was a tough year for everyone, but for our family it was especially tough. My brother-in-law was killed in the line of duty just a few months short of his retirement from the police department where he worked for 31 years. Greg was the glue that held us all together – his home was the gathering place, which is appropriate because he was born on Oahu (The Gathering Place). The parties were at his house and he played as hard as he worked. I can picture him asking who wanted cheese and jalapenos on their burger as he manned the grill. And on special party nights he made a pitcher of Kamikaze for us all to do shots. So, cheers Greg. Your smile and your laughter will live on in our hearts.

Ingredients

For a crowd....

  • 1 can frozen limeade

  • Same can filled with triple sec

  • Same can filled with vodka

For one shot....mix equal part of lime juice, triple sec and vodka

Instructions

Mix ingredients in tall pitcher and chill til party time. When I talked to his daughter about the recipe, she said he sometimes added brandy.

When you make this, say a toast to Greg and all police officers who lost their lives protecting us. And don’t forget to drink responsibly; have a designated driver or call an Uber. Or do what we did – we knew we were welcome in his home and stayed the night.

Brian made the shot glass holder in the picture out of a leftover piece of mango wood and the shot glasses we bought at the ABC (everyone who has ever been to Hawaii knows what the ABC store is!) I don’t do shots much, but I will toast to Greg from now on.

He is deeply missed.
